Shoreline and intertidal areas
Habitat characterized by different shoreline substrates, depending on human habitation and disturbance, the presence of species will vary.
Animals present:
- Rocky shores: Inhabited by gulls, terns, eider, Black guillemot, ducks, seals,
- Cliffs: Kittiwakes, shyer species like auks, gannets and fulmars only in uninhabited areas.
- Boulder shores: Inhabited by gulls, eider, Black guillemot, ducks. Oil may linger in the environment behind the outer layers of boulders and may contaminate animals.
- Gravel shores: Used by otters, gulls, ducks and waders. Flatter than rocky shores and cliffs. Oil may be buried under layers of gravel, and may stay fresh/unweathered and be available for animals for years after the spill.
- Sandy beaches: Waders
- Mud flats and dry fall areas: important foraging areas for gulls, wading birds and several other species on low tide.
