Coastal seals
Breeding colonies of seals are usually located in the outer coastal zone, on islets and rocks, usually uninhabited by people. Animals gather in larger colonies in breeding and moulting periods.

Are vulnerable especially to fresh oil, pups are especially vulnerable to surface oil that is brought to shore by adults, beached oil and near shore oil slicks. Seals are not known to avoid oil slicks.
Oil on the fur of pups may lead to loss of insulation properties of the coat. Adults of sone seal species are less dependent on their coat for insulation and are less vulnerable to oil contamination.

- Shoreline in breeding colonies and resting sites. Preferred sites are low-lying rocky shores with quick access to the water.
